Unfortunately, my ambitions outdistance the hours of the day and the number of working clones I have. What this means is there are a lot of events and dates of significance but the notices of them are still sitting in my various inboxes. For your convenience, a few are listed here:

Drat! I've run out of space and still haven't told you about the leadership events from Harvard Business

Greetings Dear Readers!
It's October and there are several observations in this month. First, it is Hispanic Heritage month. I am interested in input from our Hispanic readers, candidates and hiring/recruiting authorities alike, about
the notables in your industry and how they've influenced your career endeavors.
HR managers will want to be especially attuned to FMLA issues this month, as well as year round, because this is also Breast Cancer Awareness and Domestic Violence Awareness month. These issues are not traumatic events in one's personal life. They affect the workplace and impact attendance, to say the least.
This week's news brought emphasis to compensation and benefits issues. Some aspects of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act are being taken quite seriously when it comes to executive compensation. So much so that we found one company actually reconsidering the package being offered its top exec.
It's important to understand what goes into a meaningful and proper executive compensation package. In this issue, you'll find links to a couple of articles that may help raise your awareness. Be certain to read the checklist.

One recruiter went the extra mile with regard to his duties to keep the client responsible -- he blew the
whistle when they refused to comply with the law. Interbiznet Bugler told us about him by posting a link to the September 26 Forbes article.
In regard to hiring trends, the economic landscape is sending mixed signals that have economists and
forecasters uncertain of which direction the interest rate (and therefore business spending and expansion)
will take. These issues have an impact on whether there will be additional hiring or more workforce cuts.
Those in finance and those who have IRAs and 401(k)s will want to take note of the sunset date of October 15 when conversion of Roth IRAs back to conventional plans expires and early retiree tax rules take effect.
A Note to Readers: On October 17 and 18 two Wharton research centers - the Reginald H. Jones
Center and the Financial Institutions Center - are organizing a conference in Philadelphia titled, "New American Rules for Business? Post-Scandal Directions for Policy and Governance." The conference will bring together experts from inside and outside Wharton to discuss of future rules of the game for the American business system. These include concerns about accounting rules and auditing practice; responsibilities of corporate audit committees and boards; executive compensation practices; financial analysis; investor psychology; and corporate governance. reported scam health insurance programs are on the rise and affecting benefits programs, as well as company health and well being. The news comes from an October 2, 2002 Wall Street Journal Online article that reports this type of economy causes these types of scams to mushroom. Check either site for ways to protect yourself and your company from these unlicensed carriers.

Some of you are trying to decide whether this is a prudent time to advance your career through earning
an additional degree (or completing one) compared with getting your skills assessed and certified or just taking continuing education classes. It all depends on what your ultimate goals are. We'll consider some of those issues on the site in the near future.
Meanwhile, there are some placement tests coming up. In order to do your very best, it's wise to use a

- Have Been Top Gun, Will Travel - CEO for Rent? Here's what's required; here's who places them.
- Northwestern Mutual's Jobs Policy - Northwestern not only has not been laying off or cutting staff [in more than 145 years], it's hiring - commissioned financial reps - for sales of everything from mutual funds to long-term care insurance and corporate support for them as well. Consider what it takes to get on board with them.
- Those of you who need to keep track of Affirmative Action Program requirements will want to know that the EEOC has not reached a determination of how "applicant" should be defined, according to Management Advantage's October 3 newsletter.
- Management Advantage also reports a new Bureau of National Affairs (BNA) Affirmative Action Compliance Manual (No. 282, 8-30-02) study points to one-third of private companies as sites for intentional illegal discrimination.
According to MA's reportage, "Over one-third of those companies studied were deemed to have intentionally discriminated against workers and job applicants. The study defined "intentional discrimination" as the utilization of minorities or females at more than two standard deviations below the standard of utilization within an industry. Under federal law, an employer is presumed to be discriminating at that level of underutilization, although the presumption may be contested by the employer."

This news just arrived from McAfee on October 10, 2002
McAfee.com has seen a large and growing number of computers infected with W32/Bugbear@MM virus. The risk assessment has been UPDATED TO HIGH for home and corporate users. Users should update their anti-virus software as soon as possible.
- W32/Bugbear@MM is a mass-mailing worm that attempts to send itself to email addresses found on an infected system. It also spreads through open network shares and has the ability to send print jobs to printers found on an infected network.
- The "from" field, subject line, message body, and attachment all vary widely and may appear to be
- The virus will attempt to disable various security products, including anti-virus and personal firewall
- It will also try to install a backdoor trojan that can capture what the user types, including sensitive
information such as passwords. The trojan will also allow a hacker to upload files from the infected system,
download files onto the system, run executable files and stop processes from running.
